Emerson Launches New PACSystems™ RX3i CPS400 Safety Controller, Simplifying SIL2 System Integration

September 12, 2025

As industrial automation systems become increasingly complex, efficiently and reliably implementing safety functions while meeting international safety standards has become a key challenge for many equipment manufacturers and system integrators. To address this need, Emerson, a global leader in industrial automation technology, recently launched the new PACSystems™ RX3i CPS400 safety controller, providing a high-performance, easy-to-integrate safety control solution for infrastructure, fire and gas detection, burner management systems, and other emergency shutdown systems.

This new safety controller boasts a compact design and exceptional performance, supporting up to 2,000 I/O points and offering excellent scalability, flexibly addressing diverse needs, from small devices to plant-wide distributed safety systems. Its large 64MB memory and support for multiple industrial communication protocols (including OPC UA, Ethernet Global Data, and Modbus TCP) enable efficient peer-to-peer communication between devices and seamless integration with higher-level information systems, providing users with full operational visibility.

With industrial cybersecurity gaining increasing attention, the PACSystems RX3i CPS400 utilizes a "secure-by-design" approach, integrating Secure Boot® functionality and a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) to provide a robust protection barrier for critical control data and effectively defend against potential threats.

Furthermore, the controller offers both standalone and redundant configurations. Pre-certified safety function blocks and system templates significantly simplify the IEC 61511 system certification process, helping users reduce project development cycles and overall costs. As an IEC 61508-certified SIL2 safety solution, it offers standardized and reliable connectivity with Emerson's VersaMax™ SafetyNet I/O system, enabling the creation of a highly available protection architecture for complex applications.

Developers can continue to use the familiar PAC Machine Edition integrated development environment for configuration, enabling unified development from PLCs and HMIs to safety logic, significantly improving project integration efficiency and shortening time to production.

“The introduction of the RX3i CPS400 safety controller further enriches our safety product portfolio,” said Daniel Smith, senior product manager for Emerson’s Discrete Automation business. “It makes it easier for users to build solutions that comply with safety standards and integrate seamlessly into complex automation architectures, ultimately achieving faster time to market and greater operational reliability.”
